Simple Fix for Loose Lionel FasTrack Connections
By Richard Sappelli, TCA #70-3365 Summer 2026 e*Train

One of the greatest advantages of Lionel’s FasTrack system is its ease of assembly. Whether you’re building a temporary floor layout around the Christmas tree or a permanent railroad in a dedicated train room, the click-together design allows modelers to assemble and disassemble track quickly with minimal effort.
However, many FasTrack users eventually encounter a common issue. After years of use—or after repeatedly assembling and taking apart a layout—the locking tabs can begin to loosen. When this happens, adjoining track sections may no longer fit together as tightly as they once did. Even a slight amount of movement can interrupt electrical continuity, resulting in locomotives slowing down, lights flickering, or trains stopping unexpectedly.
Fortunately, there’s an inexpensive and remarkably effective solution.
A Simple Office Supply Comes to the Rescue
Small paper clips, the type commonly sold at office supply stores, can be used to hold two adjoining sections of FasTrack firmly together. Simply attach a miniature paper clip to the underside of the joint after the track pieces have been connected. The paper clip gently clamps the two sections together, preventing them from separating during operation while helping to maintain a solid electrical connection between the rails.
The result is a tighter mechanical connection and more consistent power delivery throughout the layout.

Why It Works
FasTrack relies on both a mechanical connection and an electrical contact between adjoining sections. As the locking mechanism wears with repeated use, even a slight amount of movement can degrade the quality of the electrical contact.
The small paper clip adds just enough holding force to keep the track sections firmly seated together without requiring any permanent modification to the track. It’s a simple solution that can save time troubleshooting intermittent electrical problems and help keep trains running smoothly.
An Affordable Fix
Miniature paper clips are inexpensive and readily available at office supply stores, discount retailers, and numerous online vendors. Since they require no tools or permanent installation, they’re an ideal solution for both temporary and permanent layouts.
Sometimes the simplest ideas prove to be the most effective. If you’ve been experiencing loose FasTrack joints or intermittent power problems, this quick fix may be just what you need to keep the “juice” flowing and your trains running reliably.
