6464 Prototypes–One of a Kind and None of a Kind
By Bob Mintz
The Lionel Archives and those in the hands of anonymous collectors contain unique 6464 prototypes, samples, factory mock-ups, color samples, paint samples, factory errors and factory variations that never made it into regular production.
Some were shown in certain color schemes and illustrated in a consumer catalogue but were never made that way.
Extremely limited quantities were made for special individuals as personal favors, various ones were made as promotion items, and a limited few were made for public relations.
Different paint schemes were experimented with and a few found their way out the back door of the factory with the help of employees done “after hours”.
Due to the plastic molding process, a certain color of material may have been leftover in the machines, only to be used or combined with another. It usually takes several runs to rid the apparatus of the previous color substance.
With such a plethora of choices, both Lionel and third party vendors have joined upon the 6464 bandwagon.
Here is the current Lionel Archive productions and more.
