A German to English Model Railroading Glossary
By Dirk Hertel, TCA #11-66219 Winter 2025 e*Train

Researching German toy trains and model railroading can be both rewarding and challenging. For collectors, historians, and operators alike, German-language catalogs, period documents, and secondary sources are rich with information—but often difficult to navigate without a working knowledge of the language. To help bridge this gap, the author is pleased to present A German to English Model Railroading Glossary, a comprehensive and thoughtfully constructed reference now available to TCA members.
This glossary was originally compiled for the National Toy Train Library by its author, Dirk Hertel, TCA #11-66219, and former Interim Librarian of the National Toy Train Library, Tyler Keck, whose combined backgrounds in model railroading, historical research, language studies, and library science uniquely positioned them to undertake a project of this scope. Rather than attempting to function as a general German dictionary, this glossary focuses specifically on the vocabulary most frequently encountered in German toy train and model railroading literature.
The glossary is organized alphabetically and provides far more than simple word-for-word translations. Each entry is carefully annotated to explain grammatical structure, abbreviations, pluralization, and usage. Clear guidance is included on how to interpret nouns, adjectives, and verbs, allowing readers—even those without prior experience in German—to confidently understand technical descriptions, catalog listings, and historical texts. Topics covered range from rolling stock and track components to railway operations, modeling techniques, eras, and accessories.
This resource is particularly valuable for members researching European manufacturers, translating original catalogs, studying prototype practices, or expanding their understanding of international railroading traditions. It also reflects the National Toy Train Library’s ongoing commitment to preservation, accessibility, and scholarship within the Train Collectors Association.
Readers are strongly encouraged to consult the attached glossary in full. Whether you are a serious researcher or a curious collector, this is a reference you will want to download, save, and return to often.
